General Population Drug Use

The General Population Drug Use team brings together survey statisticians, demographers and epidemiologists who share the production and analysis of large representative surveys of the general population. Our areas of interest are the description of social and gender inequalities in licit and illicit drug use, their constitution and evolution over the course of life, and their structuring in space. For example, we recently described the evolution of tobacco and cannabis consumption in France for several generations and began to study the link between immigration and tobacco consumption. The other themes all concern major aspects of public health in relation to drugs: geography of drug use, trajectories of drug use during life, mental health, the social determinants of drug use...

We collaborate on the methodology of large general population surveys dealing with psychoactive substances produced by the major players in the field: Santé publique France and the French Observatory of Drugs and Drug Addiction. This synergy increases the quality of the data and makes it possible to prepare more efficiently for the treatment of some jointly defined themes. For example, we are proposing improvements to survey adjustments and exploring alternative collection methods to better cover the population (internet panel, volunteer surveys, etc.); we are also carrying out work to validate instruments for detecting disorders related to alcohol and cannabis consumption in the long term, to better estimate the size of the population at risk.
